The Epic Quest and Recruitment Empty The Epic Quest and Recruitment

The walls of the Hiute clan stand 30 feet tall and create an Octagon around a central tower. On the outside 30 ft watch towers have been erected and are filled with Archers. Other archers line the outer wall and watch wearily as our three hero’s approach. Along with our hero’s arrival come curious lights in the sky that continue to spread into a circular pattern as the group hails the guards looking for Hartford.
In this initial conversation the hero’s discover that “many have come looking for Hartford, claiming to be friends, and turn out to be thieves. Not being as tactful as their companion in arms, Lance, the group struggles to establish solid evidence of friendship. As the discussion of past connections continues Rayne notices that the lights are beginning to draw closer to the ground. Raath tries to bring this to the attention of the guards while establishing the fact that they did not bring the lights with them. The guards seem unconvinced and still refuse to let the party within the gates of their stronghold.
All at once similar lights shoot up from the ground connecting with the lights in the sky with strong gold bands. The ground trembles, A sharp wind gusts through the area, and within seconds of initial connection a think and impenetrable darkness seals the outside sphere leaving our party is low light stuck in what they recognize to be an arena pit. How? They are not sure but the balls of light and their connecting bands are unmistakable to the lights that Rayne shot bringing down the borders of their first arena battle. The guards still blaming our party for this sudden magical binding is surprised by two large Goblinoid creatures that suddenly appear from one of the walls.
Slashing about they scream “The artifact will be ours” Aki speaks to Cardian (head of the guards) asking him what artifact these monsters seek. This comes as a surprise to Cardian thinking they as the attackers would know. Softening to the idea that perhaps these three heroes are not here as thieves he mentions the bow of Lithrin which is wielded by Hartford (Leader of the Hiute clan and former acquaintance of Rayne’s). Without another word Rayne puts three arrow in one of the Goblinoids silencing his tongue and dropping him back into the void from which he came. The other takes an arrow, as well as a scorching ray from Aki dropping him to his knees in pain. The conversation about the artifact continues and Rayne is able to convince Cardian that they are here not to steal but vow to help protect the artifact from malicious hands. As two Hiute guards from the outer towers approach the monster on his knees Rayne simply puts him down with a single arrow to the head. The guards look almost relieved and move in to inspect the bodies. As the party finally gains access to the stronghold and takes up positions of defense they notice that the ground is still rumbling slightly and strange shadows dance in unexpected places. Once in position the real battle begins in a very unexpected way.
A Rock Troll come shooting out of the ground knocking down the two guards that were inspecting what is now seen as the distraction. Once out of the ground he wails on both guards leaving them battered and prone. The heroes don’t wait to take action and immediately charge in unleashing all the damage they can muster on the new enemy. Within seconds the troll is dropped into a 5,000 pound heap. Sadly it drops partially on Aki. As Raath tries to get him out the guard that remains standing suddenly changes his countenance, draws an arrow, and shoots Raath in the shoulder. Cries from Cardian for him to stand down come from the fort but it is not enough for Raath. Raath Steps forward and say simply “He can’t hear you” right before he buries his swords the guard dropping him to the ground. The guards almost panic in confusion trying to decide how to handle this apparent betrayal when the second Rock Troll bursts into the top of an outer tower. As the troll is removed from the ground one guard is flung by an unseen force from the tower landing unconscious on the ground. The last remaining guard fights nobly but is clearly outmatched. With the help of only a couple other arrows Rayne full rounds this new beast dropping him from the tower before he can finish off the remaining guard.
After this Aki makes it out from under the large beast and heals the guard that Raath so quickly cut down. Upon returning to consciousness this guard has also returned to his normal self and is no longer hostile… Trolls don’t have the ability to possess… It would seem to the party that there is more going on than what they currently understand. Before they have time to investigate however, another large beast bursts from the wall below Rayne’s feet. He however is quick on his feet and makes the decision to not remain on the wall with the beast but attempts to jump over him to the ground below. This proves however, that his reflexes are better than his coordination and he trips tumbling over the beast and falling prone to the ground 30ft below. During this Aki takes the chance to cast air walk on Raath giving him the ability to charge in a straight line at the beast on the wall. After literally throwing a guard from the wall the troll turns to confront his new attacker. They exchange a few hits before Raath critically strikes with his menacing blade, slashing the monster open, putting it in a daze. He proceeds in his new found strength and rage to kick the beast in the face pushing it over the ledge, tumbling to the ground below. (coincidentally it about lands on top of Rayne but luckily he retains his good reflexes. Killing an enemy with such malicious intent sends Raath into an inner struggle that claims his strength and movement for the next half minute.
During this struggle Rayne and Aki are left alone to face the last Rock Troll, which has emerged from the inner tower with Hartfords body over his shoulder, alone. The two battle bravely with Rayne accepting attacks of opportunity every round to spare Aki giving him the freedom to cast. They fight the beast down to lower health when the three shadow demons appear. To this point they have possessed and killed 2 guards and thrown 4 others from the heights in many cases crushing the life from them on the landing. They initially appear and keep all the others on the battle field occupied letting the Troll do his work. However, when the troll hits low life they shift their attention again to our heroes.
The battle gets sore as Raath regains his focus. (After having destroyed his menacing blade to do so) He takes his one remaining blade and charges with valor at a demon striking with all the force he has. However, in his weakened state he fails to resist the Demons fear effects and ends up running panicked to a far corner of the arena. Another Demon takes the chance to telekinetically disarm Rayne tossing his only weapon over the 30ft wall out of reach. With low health and no ability to damage the troll Rayne takes a chance and charges for the bow still held by the corpse of Hartford. He dodges the trolls massive arms and lands on his knees next to the Lithren Bow. Hope seems close until he comes in contact. A bright flash of light and he passes out cold leaving Aki as the only one standing to fight the troll and three incorporeal shadow demons that are controlling the battle field. He stands undaunted in this epic moment with no backup and challenges his enemies with a fireball. It hits his foes with suck power that the troll is knocked from his feet and left dying on the ground. (Coincidentally on top of Rayne almost killing him) Aki then bursts his channel energy pushing back the onslaught of demons and hurting them significantly. Two of the Demons focus him but are unable to take him down due to his constant channeling. The third Demon that is focused on Raath is shocked to find him come out of being panicked early and cutting what little matter he has to pieces with his sword that seems to come from nowhere. At this point the three demons decide their role in this battle is useless. The all teleport to the top of the middle tower and in an act of pride begin to explain that the parties powers and artifacts will be noted and… before they can finish Rayne has crawled from under the beast and shot three arrows in them destroying their leader in the first two shots. Aki reacts as well within seconds and does one final burst that catches the fleeing demons in its wave utterly destroying them both.
There the party stands. On a battle field littered with bodies of trolls, goblinoids, demon matter, and Hiute guards. Aki takes time to heal all who can be saved and Rayne and Raath gather them up. During this time in almost an instant the arenas walls break, dissolving its cage and our heroes are back again on the outskirts of town.
With their leader dead and Rayne now bound to the bow of Lithren he offers protection to the small clan in exchange for their allegiance. Raath almost shines more in control than he has felt in a long time and with a new sword at his side. Aki however, being the reason that many of the guards are alive including the one Raath dropped is seen as the hero. No matter how close to defeat he fought on even if he was fighting alone and even in this desperate abandoned state he still took time to heal his friends and allies. As a result the Hiute clan offers him a small token artifact. A symbol from of the Gods.
Midas has gained their first allies and new enemies. Many questions remain unanswered. Was that really a part of the tournament? How did the arena unwillingly take them in? Who was behind this? Oh, and what in the heck to these tight items do!!!! Smile

Epic indeed. There was much epicosity. So GM, will there be other threads created for treasure and future planning conversations, or are we doing an all-in-one this time? Or should we create such threads ourselves as needed...?

P.S. What does my sword do?!

Oh and another question: do we need to level up our characters to level 8 before next session, or not yet?

The Epic Quest and Recruitment Empty Answers

Yes you can level up your characters, Item details are on the way, and there will be a main storyline thread but this thread can contain treasure talk and such if needed. You are also free to start threads in this forum whenever you feel it is needed. Only the "Main story line" thread will have timeframe.

Also important note: In the Main Story Line thread ANYONE can speak on behalf of the party as a whole. Example: Raath says that Lance goes out and gathers information about "insert topic here" and returns to tell the group. That is completely acceptable and encouraged so we are never waiting on people to respond since schedules vary a lot Smile
